Coffin Residence

2003

Houston, Texas

On a compact West University Place lot, this 3,000 square foot residence is a challenge to the assumption that it takes a large house to accommodate a family's active lifestyle. An L-shaped building optimizes the relationship of interior and exterior space, with an open plan surrounding a gravel court. Inspired by the owners' appreciation for French country houses, the indoor-outdoor relationship is modulated by arcades, awnings, balconies and working shutters. A double-height dining area links entry, kitchen and living to the second floor sitting area to continue the open planning into the building section. Stained concrete floors and sisal carpets provide a modern foil to mahogany french doors and windows, stone fireplace and countertops, and French architectural antiques.
